Barcelona Digital Centro Tecnológico

Barcelona Digital Technology Centre is a Technology Centre devoted to the R+D+I of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) applications for eHealth, eSecurity and eMobility. Barcelona Digital performs R+D activities in the three aforementioned strategic domains participating in research projects with industry and also projects publicly supported by national and European R+D programmes. With regard to eHealth Barcelona Digital's main areas of activity are: neurorehabilitation support technologies, bioinformatics and interoperability of clinical applications, accessible and assistive ICT, and tele-assistance systems.

Barcelona Digital has a staff of +30 professionals (doctors, engineers, technicians, project managers), with multidisciplinary and complementary backgrounds in different ICT fields. Barcelona Digital also cooperates with other research centres and laboratories within the Barcelona region's academic community. Barcelona Digital has already undertaken several projects with private and public (national and regional) funding. Its eHealth projects are Neurolearning - Telemedical system of Neuropsychological Intervention based in Interactive Virtual Environments (2008-2010), Neurorehabilitation3E+D - Modelling of electromechanical systems for automatization, sensorization and monitoring in functional rehabilitation (2008-2010), INREDIS - Interfaces for the relationship between disabled persons and the environment (2008-2012) - Rehabilita, and are focused on the areas of neuro-rehabilitation, tele-assistance and accessible ICT.Furthermore it has several European project proposals in development. Additionally, the staff - both at R&D and management levels - bring with them several years of experience in the preparation, coordination, management and successful undertaking of regional, national and European R&D projects. The Fundació Privada Institut de Neurorehabilitació Guttmann is a private, community beneficial, non-denominational, non-profit organization linked to the Autonomous University of Barcelona. FPING's mission is to provide the most comprehensive, customized and specialized medical and rehabilitation care at the highest human, scientific and technical level.

Its modern facilities, a team of nearly 400 practitioners and a record of more than 13,000 patients treated make the Guttmann Institute one of the most advanced, world-class hospitals of its kind. It also runs its own University Research Institute, which develops education programs, scientific and research aspects in the area of neuroscience in general, and neurorehabilitation and technologies applied to personal independence in particular. Through this combination of Hospital/Centre of Excellence and Research/Centre of Knowledge, the FPING is in the exceptional position of maintaining improvement in study, practice and feedback: it provides a significant case body to maintain and develop its employee's expertise, guarantee safety, quality and efficiency of care and, furthermore grounds on a systematic use of an accurate and ethical work model.

FPING main areas of research are: Bioengineering applied to functional rehabilitation, Information and Communication Technologies applied to cognitive rehabilitation, Cell Therapy applied to Spinal Cord Injury and ABI, Neuromodulation and Noninvasive Stimulation, Digestive Neurophysiology and Data analysis applied to knowledge generation. gnitive rehabilitation, Cell Therapy applied to Spinal Cord Injury and ABI, Neuromodulation and Noninvasive Stimulation, Digestive Neurophysiology and Data analysis applied to knowledge generation.

FPING has participated in several collaborative R&D projects in the framework of regional and national programs of relevance to BrainAble: Tools development to evaluate outcome of technologies applied to the rehabilitation process in people with a severe disability of neurological origin (2006-2007), development of an intensive gait rehabilitation program assisted by electro mechanical systems in children with spinal cord injury and brain damage. (2005-2006), PREVIRNEC - Development of a cognitive telerehabilitation platform for patients with acquired brain damage (2005-2007), Telemedicine Platform for cognitive telerehabilitation (2007-2008), NEUROLEARNING (2008-2011), NEUROREHABILITATION_3E+D (2008-2010).

Additionally FPING is a partner in several European and International projects, such as: EuroPaNet - Microinfomatics applied to neuropsychological rehabilitation in children with TBI (2002-2004), Clinical Leading Environment for the Assessment and validation of Rehabilitation (CLEAR) Protocols in home care (2008-2010), European Multicenter Study of Human Spinal Cord Injury (EM-SCI) (2006-2008), Home Care Activity Desk (H-CAD) for upper limb rehabilitation; (2003-2005), -HEalLthcare Service Linking TelerehabilitatiOn to Disable peOple and Clinicians (HELLODOC)(2005-2007).
